5.  OLIVER THOM
by Kerry Phillips © 2008

VERSE 1:
Oliver Thom was not a great musician
Even at his best, he was ‘okay’
The guitar he played only knew
just one progression
“E” and “D” and sometimes maybe “A”

Oliver Thom played the bars in old El Paso
The kind only barflies know to go
He would pull out his guitar
and sip Jack Daniels
Then start what he referred to as his “Show”

BRIDGE 1:
“Hello!  I’m one more singer
With one more song
Playin’ one more tune
Before I say, ‘So long’.”
He’d play a little while then pass his hat
And that as they say, good folks, was that

VERSE 2:
He’d sing songs of odds and ends
and useless trivia
Songs about empty cans and worn-out shoes
Songs about love and loss,
and songs of Galveston
Though he’d never been there,
it was the one place he would choose

CHORUS 1:
He would sing:
“I wanna go there
To that place by the ocean
Where I will live peaceable all my days
And I may decide
Or just get the notion
To go in the water and drift away.”

VERSE 3:
Oliver Thom used to sing what he called
“Poetry of the Junkyard”
Of things dismissed and memories now forgot
Of discarded items no one has a use for
Oh, they may have been needed one time
but now they’re not

He’d say, back in the day,
he had a way with the ladies
Oh, but that was many wives ago
Now he keeps to himself
and Mister Jack Daniels
Is tellin’ him now it’s time to start “His Show”

BRIDGE 2:
“Hello!  I’m one more singer
With one more song
Playin’ one more tune
Before I say, ‘So long’.”
He’d play a little while then pass his hat
And that as they say, good folks, was that

INSTRUMENTAL
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah ah ah
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah ah, ah ah
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah ah ah
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah ah, ah ah

VERSE 4:
I don’t know what happened to
“The Poet of the Junkyard”
I moved to Houston many years ago
But occasionally,
I walk the beach in Galveston
And remember how Oliver Thom
sang in his show

CHORUS 2:
He would sing:
“I wanna go there
To that place by the ocean
Where I will live peaceable all my days
And I may decide
Or just get the notion
To go in the water and drift away.”

“I wanna go there
To that place by the ocean
Where I will live peaceable all my days
And I may decide
Or I may get the notion
To go in the water and drift away
Drift away
Drift away. . .”

by Kerry Phillips © 2007

Ooo . . .
Hoo-hoo-ooo-ooo, Woo-ooo-ooo, ooo-oo
Hoo-hoo-ooo-ooo, Woo-ooo-ooo, ooo-oo

VERSE 1:
We’re gonna have a little talk
And I really kinda dread it:
I give up on you
There, I guess I said it
Baby,
Look sharp, Get straight
If you wanna make amends,
Well, baby, too late
Hold on, Well hey
I ain’t through with you
I got somethin’ more to say

CHORUS 1:
I Got News
I got some news for you, honey
(Wella-wella-wella now)
I Got News
A piece of Spanish news for you, honey
(Yeah yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah)

BRIDGE 1:
You been runnin’ round,
Yeah, you’re always on the go
You keep others on the side
And you thought I wouldn’t know
I Got News, I Got News, I Got News
(Talk about it)

INSTRUMENTAL 1
Ooo. . .
Oh, yeah yeah, Oh, yeah yeah

VERSE 2:
That’s it, we’re through
My lord, what did I ever see in you?
Now what?  Don’t you start a cryin’,
Good grief!  That’s worse than all your lyin’
You’re rich, ain’t no doubt about it.
Land sakes, I can do without it,

CHORUS 2:
‘Cause I Got News
I got some news for you, honey
(Wella-wella-wella now)
I Got News
A piece of Spanish news for you, honey
(Yeah yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah)

Bridge 2:
When it comes to all your money
I never got a dime
The only thing you spent on me
Was just a little time
I Got News, I Got News, I Got News
(Talk about it)

INSTRUMENTAL 2
Ooo . . .
Ay, Ay-yi- yi, Ay yi-yi
Oh, yeah yeah
Oh, yeah yeah

VERSE 3:
Your loss, my gain
To try to make this work is totally insane
What else?  I got a list
Let me check it over for somethin’ I missed.
Guess not; that’s all I have to say
I’m gone.  Oh, and by the way?

CHORUS 3:
I Got News
I got some news for you, honey
(Wella-wella-wella now)
I Got News
A piece of Spanish news for you, honey
(Yeahyeah, yeah-yeah-yeah)

BRIDGE 3:
I got another lover
And it’s workin’ out fine
Do I have to spell it out?
Do I  have to paint a sign
I Got News, I Got News, I Got News
(Whisper to me)
I Got News, I Got News, I Got News
(Shout it out)
I Got News, I Got News, I Got News
(Talk about it)
7.  MY, MY (IT’S A WONDERFUL WORLD)
by Kerry Phillips  © 2007

VERSE 1:
Things are goin’ great
and I’m havin’ me a good time
Ev’rything I do just turns out right
“Luck” is not the word I’d use to describe it
“Fortunate and blessed” only border on trite

For example, this mornin’
I put on my blue jeans,
Reached in my pocket to pull out some gum
Guess what was there, among the expected?
A fifty-dollar bill.  Where did that come from?

CHORUS 1:
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
Where wonderful people
share wonderful times
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
An epic poem with really good rhymes.
Good rhymes.

VERSE 2:
Well, I got a video playin’ on YouTube
Ev’rybody says it’s their “Favorite” one
MySpace page is filled with my good friends
Tellin’ me they love ev’rything I have done

I’m popular with the general public
My phone rings most all of the time
People ask me over just to be around me
That’s what it’s like when your life is sublime

CHORUS 2:
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
Where wonderful people
share wonderful times
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
An epic poem with really good rhymes.
Good rhymes.

INSTRUMENTAL
Ba-da ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-dah
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-dah
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-dah
Ah . . .

Do-wah, Do wah

VERSE 3:
I have invitations to so many dinners
It’s been years since I had to cook
Then errbody ask me to tell a good story
And ev’ryone I tell ends up as a book

Gosh, so many people say they want to do me
I accommodate them as best as I can
You see, from what I hear,
I’m really good lookin’
Oh, what could be better than to be who I am?
Oh, what could be better than to be who I am?

CHORUS 3:
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
Where wonderful people
share wonderful times
My, My, It’s A Wonderful World
An epic poem with really good rhymes.
Good rhymes.

La, la, la la-la-la
La la la-la-la It’s A Wonderful World
So beautiful, So lovely. . .
8.  SITTIN’ AROUND
by Kerry Phillips  © 1977

Wah ha-ha. . .

VERSE 1:
Sittin’ on the porch as the sun goes down
Ain’t doin’ much at all, just Sittin’ Around
Sittin’ in the mornin’, sittin’ at night
All this Sittin’ Around, it just ain’t right.

CHORUS 1:
But I wait for your call,
You told me you’d call
So I’m Sittin’ Around
Sittin’ Around doin’ nothin’
Absolutely nothin'
Nothin’ at all
Wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah Wah, wah

VERSE 2:
Sittin’ on the porch and it’s time for bed
Feelin’ low-down, my eyes is red.
Don’t care to weep, I don’t care to cry
Don’t want to do nothin’, don’t even try

CHORUS 2:
I can’t sleep at night,
I just look at the wall
So I’m Sittin’ Around,
Sittin’ Around doin’ nothin’
Absolutely nothin’
Nothin’ at all
Wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah Wah, wah

BRIDGE:
I guess I’ll make another pot of coffee
(Do you wanna play cards?)
Or maybe play a game of solitaire
(Do you wanna take a walk?)
I guess I’ll walk around the kitchen table
What else can I do?  What else can I do?

(What’s the point?)
There used to be a point to this existence
(And the motivation?)
There used to be a reason to kind of live
(Here’s the revelation)

There used to be a cookie on this table
Where did it go?  Who ate my cookie?
What was I talkin’ about?

Wah wah wah wah wah wah, wah-wah
Wah wah wah wah wah wah, wah-wah

VERSE 3:
Sittin’ on the Porch and it’s almost dawn
Chewin’ fingernails, my cigarettes is gone
I feel like a fool, that’s all I got to say
‘Cause I don’t care that much
about you, anyway

CHORUS 3:
But you told me you’d call,
So I wait for your call

And I’ll do nothin’
(Wah wah wah-wah)
I’m gonna do nothin’
(Wah-wah-wah-wah)
I won’t do nothin’,
Absolutely nothin’
Nothin’ at
All
9.  RETRO DANCE CLUB
by Kerry Phillips © 2007

Ah-ah, Ah-ah
Ah, ah ah, Ah ah, ah ah

VERSE 1 :
In the half-light, you’re walking toward me
Floating slowly through the melee
Hallucination?  Well, maybe
As you seem to part the faceless crowd

Whispers come from out of nowhere
But instructions are quite clear
“Exercise your sense of judgment,
Weigh decisions, have no fear.”

CHORUS 1:
You smile serenely, then you touch me
Press my hand and turn away

BRIDGE 1:
But you won’t dance,
(You won’t dance, you won’t dance)
No, you won’t dance with me
(You won’t dance, you won’t dance)
You won’t dance

VERSE 2:
I approach again with good intentions
Take my chances and follow through
Allocating just enough time
To seemingly arrive exactly when you do

My heart a hammer on an anvil,
Perspiration on my brow
I am filled with anticipation,
Can’t believe you’re standing here
with me right now

CHORUS 2:
You smile serenely, then you touch me,
Press my hand, and turn away

BRIDGE 2:
And you won’t dance,
(Won’t you dance?  Won’t you dance?)
Why won’t you dance with me?
(Won’t you dance?  Won’t you dance?)
Won’t you dance?
(Won’t you dance?  Won’t you dance?)

INSTRUMENTAL
Ah. . .

VERSE 3:
(Come along, son)
Who are these people?
(Now, don’t give me any trouble),
Sir, unhand me!
(Stalker Patrol to Base:
We've got the situation under control.  Copy?)
Unintelligible mutters on the phone
(We're taking him there right now.)
I am escorted,
(Hey, stay on your feet!)
Rather roughly,
(Out ya go.)
To the door and find myself out all alone.

CHORUS 3:
On the street again, there’s your fancy car,
You were so near and now so far.

CHORUS 4:
The music blending, light ascending,
I am ending with a song

TAG:
(Oh someone dance)
Someone dance, someone dance
(Someone dance with me)
Someone dance, someone dance
(Someone dance)
Someone dance, someone dance . . .
